Shelter Me by Catherine Mann

This is a story about second chances and loving your family throughout the tough times.
I was drawn to this book because of the cover, it’s very adorable and it’s pet themed, so I knew it would be a light-hearted read.
Summary
Sierra is a great daughter. She puts her life on hold to stay with her mom, brother and grandfather during the time where she loses her father. Sierra’s mother owns a second chance pet place, where they take in pets that might be killed. Sierra has a tough life and with a rude little brother and aging grandfather, Sierra has her fill of things she needs to take care of.
Sergeant Mike is off from a tour in Iraq. His mission is to deliver the dog that Sierra’s father made friends with. Mike use to date Sierra and it didn’t work out because Mike felt like he wasn’t good enough for her, but with the father not around, it’s hard for Mike to not lend a helping hand with the family.
Review
I like light hearted books, but I feel like this book was more chick-lit oriented around the family more than a romance. I liked how Sierra and Mike had a history, so there wasn’t like a crazy insta-lust or anything. It was just pent-up frustration from the time they were together.
It did take be a bit to get into the story. I think it was around the 25% mark where things picked up and I got more of the Sierra and Mike relationship. There’s a lot of back story with the mom, brother and grandfather.
I was interested in the mother’s story because she’s drinking and she misses her husband. There are fellas in town that are attracted her and I wanted the mom to find someone to love. The brother was kind of annoying, but added some needed tension. The grandfather is starting to lose his mind and it really broke your heart, but again it added a little something to the story.
On top of those issues, someone is sabotaging the pet farm and it adds a little more stress to the whole group.
Mike is a great guy, he has his past issues with his childhood, but he really cares for Sierra and is crazy attracted to her. Sierra doesn’t want to be hurt again and she also has to deal with family drama. There’s tension and it’s very yummy to read.
Overall, Shelter Me is a cute read, it’s not very intense, but it will leave you with warm fuzzy feelings.
