Breaching the Contract (Conflict of Interest #1) by Chantal Fernando

Katerina Dawson knows exactly what she wants from life. And as the new associate at the top law firm in the city, she’s ready to live out her dreams of becoming a criminal lawyer. But going on coffee runs and babysitting kids during the day was definitely not what she had in mind. She knows that anyone else would kill to be in her shoes, but she has to draw the line somewhere. That’s easier said than done, though, when Kat has to confront her handsome boss…
Tristan Channing and Jaxon Bentley run a successful law firm together and the two partners couldn’t be busier right now. When Jaxon suddenly takes a leave of absence, Tristan begrudgingly assumes responsibility of the new associate, the hot new associate, who has curves for days. Needing to keep his distance from her, Tristan sends Kat on needless errands and has her doing work even an intern wouldn’t touch, like picking up his kids. But his plan backfires when he sees his children grow attached to Kat and sees her getting comfortable in his home. It triggers something deep within him, and it feels right to have her there. Will Tristan be able to keep his work and personal lives separate, or will he find that his heart holds the final verdict?

4 Easy Read Stars

Breaching the Contract is a standalone and is part of the Conflict of Interest Series by Chantal Fernando. I’ve only read Chantal’s MC and heavier books, so I was curious to see how her lighter works would be.

I woke up at 3AM and I couldn’t sleep and decided to give this book a go. To my surprise, it hit all the right notes. I was engaged, it was light, there was a single dad (and everyone knows I love a good single parent book) and it was really easy to read. I read it in two hours in the dead of the night and I’m so glad I picked up this book.

I love a good office romance read and this one is a good enemy to lovers one. Kate works for a law firm. Tristan is one of the managing partners of the firm. I’m a fan of lawyer books and I was a little disappointed that there wasn’t a lot of lawyer speak. I get it, it’s kind of hard to navigate through that world, but I was looking for hardcore action. However, the tension between Kate and Tristan was really good.

I liked that Kate works hard and wants to make something of herself and I like Tristan because he was a hard boss that made Kate do simple tasks like get his coffee.  I’m not too sure how accurate the book is, it’s hard to believe that a girl would be working on cases with a partner right out of law school and it’s hard to believe the firm only has like 4 employees, I really do hope the future books will add more associates and there’s a little more world building.

The book is super short and sweet and I couldn’t ask for anything more. I love simple reads that hit all the right spots. I can understand how there wasn’t much lawyer talk and super deep character development. I felt like you got just enough of the characters to be sucked into the story, but not bored with anything too fluffy.

I love the little kids and I’m happy they were good kids. I’m never a fan of the bratty kids. I’m not too sure how accurate that Tristan would be 30-ish with his kids. The age was never mentioned, but it would mean he would have to have them around law school. I think it’s because my brother in law is a lawyer and all the partners at his firm are old farts.

Overall, I’m all for the light-hearted books (usually it’s not my cuppa) but this one was pretty good.
