Temporary by Sarina Bowen and Sarah Mayberry

The most beautiful man I've ever seen is the one who can ruin everything...

The first time I lay eyes on Callan Walker, I know he’ll be trouble. With his smug grin, hot Aussie accent and thousand dollar shoes, he’s just the kind of rich guy who always gets what he wants.

And he wants two things: a night of sin, and my cooperation as he outmaneuvers his powerful mother to take control of his uncle’s estate.

I can’t afford either one. I’m the only thing standing between my little sister and the foster care system. He may have money and charm on his side, but I have something even more powerful -- pure desperation. This temp job at his mother’s company can become a full time job for me. It has to.

But when Callan’s eyes rake over my body, sometimes I forget my obligations. His piercing gaze finds the fun, optimistic girl I used to be and not the tired person I’ve become.

And it works--if only for a moment. Our night together was a mistake. I can't afford to get sucked into his high-powered family’s treachery. But the closer I get to Callan, the more layers I find beneath those expensive clothes. Though I can’t forget this is temporary. He’s temporary. I have too much to lose.

Too bad my foolish heart didn’t get the memo...

4 Working Together Stars

This is my first book by Sarah Mayberry and Sarina Bowen is a one-click author for me. I love it when authors work together because I am always curious to how the writing will go.

Temporary is an easy going read with plenty of tension, character buildup and chemistry between Callan and Grace.

The things I enjoyed about this book…

I really liked the dynamics between Callan and Grace. This is a super meaty book, so there’s plenty of time for the characters to get to know each other. It never felt like it dragged and the dialogue completely flowed.

I liked the storyline, it wasn’t so out there and it was a simple one. Callan’s uncle dies and someone needs to go through the Estate and get it ready for sale. The problem? The Estate is left to his mother and Grace is handling it. Callan wants the proceeds of the sale to go to charities. I don’t read many books with this plot and it was an interesting idea in bringing the two characters together. This created tension since they were on opposite sides.

I liked that an Aussie author wrote an Aussie character. I’m not an expert or anything but it’s REALLY hard for an American author to pull off a non-American character. Every time I read slang or something non-American it always feels non-organic, but I never got this with Callan.

What I felt like could have been written differently.

I picked up this book because Grace is a raising her sister. I felt like the sister is kind of thrown out in the beginning. At one point I forget she was in the book until towards the middle. I felt like there should have been a better flow of writing the sister in and been a little more consistent. I also found her character hard to like. I usually don’t like it when the kids aren’t amicable.

Grace’s past is kind of hinted in the book and again, I felt like this was an after thought and didn’t really add anything to the story. It didn’t hinder my experience, but again, it felt like an afterthought.

Overall, it’s a good contemporary book. It’s usually hard for me to get into contemporary books because I like something a little dramatic, but Temporary really engaged me and I read every word and read it in one sitting.

I’m already a Sarina fan and it’s nice I can add Sarah Mayberry to my list.

Sarah Mayberry was born in Melbourne, Australia, and is the middle of three children. From the time that she first “stole” paper from kindergarten and stapled it together to make “books,” Sarah has always wanted to be a writer. In line with this ambition, on graduation from high school she completed a bachelor of arts degree majoring in professional writing, then sat down to write a book. When inspiration didn’t strike, she began to wonder if, perhaps, she needed to live some life first before writing about it.
