Dante Galante has evaded death a few times in his life, but held captive in a sweltering basement, he's certain that death has finally caught up to him. Bloody and barely breathing, he tries to stay strong, but there's only so much a man can endure before darkness takes over.
As a critical care nurse, Gabriella Russo witnesses suffering often. Thick-skinned, forever cautious, she doesn't take her work home with her... until Dante Galante lands himself in her hospital. Recklessly grieving the sister he believes he'll never see again, Dante needs a friend. Just a friend. That's all it's supposed to be.
But life has other plans for them, just as it had for Matteo Barsanti and Genevieve Galante. Away from the chaos, building a life of their own, there's only one thing that could ever bring them back to New York: Dante.
Rules get broken and boundaries are crossed as the fight between rival families continues on, drawing them all deeper into a war they want far away from... for good reason.
5 Soul Saving Stars
Sweetest Sorrow is the second book in the Forbidden series by J.M. Darhower. I loved By Any Other Name, which is the first book in the series. I was beginning to think the author was never going to finish the series and then BAM what a happy surprise when I realized Sweetest Sorrow was released.
I didn’t have any expectations from this book. I will be honest and say I forgot what happened. But don’t worry after reading a few chapters, all the stuff comes back.
Sweetest Sorrow is a meaty book. I think my kindle told me it would take seven reading hours to finish. I was a bit intimidated by the estimation, but I was like, BRING IT. I really liked the length of the book in the end because I got so much out of the story. I felt like everything was needed and justified. Also the story has a sweet slow build up that just makes it more interesting and more addictive to read.
By Any Other Name is mostly Matteo and Gen’s story which I REALLY loved. We know at the end of the book they are on the run and surprise Gen is pregnant. You know I love a pregnant mama book, but what makes Sweetest Sorrow really yummy is that we get more of Dante and Gabriella’s story. Dante is Gen’s brother and they think each other is dead.
I liked that there were two storylines going on because it really added something to the book. Matteo and Gen are on the run, but I liked that their love is strong and it’s just them as a couple. I love how much Matteo loves Gen and how much he is willing to do for his pregnant mama. It’s super adorable and I gobbled up those pages.
I also liked Reading Dante and Gabriella’s story because it was different and new and Dante is SO tortured I really felt for him. He’s broken, beaten up and battered and Nurse Gabriella is there to help him find his way. I kind of liked the reversed damsel in distress storyline. I liked the whole book.
A lot goes on and there’s plenty of drama, crying, killing and fighting. I was engrossed with everything and I couldn’t put the book down, but I did many times because it was a seven hour read! Regardless it was a perfect read and I wouldn’t mind another spin-off, or some side story to extend the series. You never know. Fingers crossed for another happy surprise.
