The word master echoed like a bad tuning fork.

Master. Master.
No, he wasn’t my master. Not with his short, sleek hair and sharp widow’s peak. Not with his clenched, stubble-smooth jaw and trim physique. He was not my master. No one was.
Tears pricked as I thought about Brax. He seemed a world away compared to this reality. Brax was rough and boyish, a hard worker through and through. The man, staring with pale jade eyes and an unreadable, chiselled face, lived in total contrast. Power radiated like visible waves, unsettling me more than anything.
He wasn’t the fat, repulsive bastard who used wealth to buy sex slaves. He wasn’t gross or any other monstrous things. Who is this man?
My eyes widened, drinking him in—the owner of this house. The owner of… me. No, never.
I didn’t care who he was, because my life belonged to me. I stuck out my chin, glaring. I wouldn’t be intimidated by wealth or stature. I didn’t care he was tall and moved like he expected the world to lick his shoes. I would never lick anything of his.
The man never broke eye contact, ensnaring me in his gaze. Slowly, he pushed off the banister and moved toward the stairs.
I gulped.
He was smooth water—effortless in refinement but just like still water, dangerous if you couldn’t swim. Deadly rips and currents lurked deep below the surface. I eyed him, trying to figure out what sick pleasures he indulged in that normal, willing women were hard to come by.
My heart raced with every step he took, descending toward me.
The guard pushed me forward. “Bow to your new master.”
I tripped, but regained my footing instantly. My fists shook, I clenched them so hard. My injuries reminded me all of this was wrong. In some warped sense, it seemed innocent like the owner of the house merely welcoming a guest.
“I have no master,” I said, putting every ounce of rebellion into the words. “Let me go.”
The man stopped mid-step, head cocked. His fingers curled around the banister, showing manicured nails, no calluses in sight. Once again, pale eyes connected with mine, sucking my thoughts into a vacuum.
Up till now, his face had been unreadable, but as we stared, flashes of emotion buffeted me. Anger. Interest. Annoyance. Resignation. And finally, in a blaze of jade…lust.
My breath quickened and I tried to step back again, only to collide with the wall of the guard’s chest.
The guard placed a hot, heavy hand between my shoulder blades and pushed, forcing me into a struggling, painful bow. “Do as you’re told.”
So many thoughts collided. I wanted to spin and steal the gun in the holster under his arm. I wanted to shoot everyone. I wanted to slash at the gorgeous artwork and priceless artefacts around the room. Such things of beauty did not deserve to belong to a man whose goons forced a sex slave to bow.
“Bastard,” I muttered, hating I couldn’t do any of it. All I could do was obey—for now.
“Stop. If she doesn’t want to bow, then don’t force her.” The masculine voice reminded me of glinting steel, shaped with precision and strength. It was the sound of authority, and despite my best attempts to rebel, I bowed on my own. The sheer weight of his voice compelled obedience.
The guard’s hand left my back. He chuckled. “If she doesn’t want to bow, perhaps she wants to crawl.”
My back snapped upright, and I jumped a mile. My new owner stood directly in front of me. Hands in his slack pockets, head cocked slightly to the side, as if inspecting a piece of art.
“She may crawl if she wishes,” he murmured.
“I do not wish,” I snapped.
Once again, our eyes connected and I searched for the evil like the men in Mexico, but he guarded himself too well. Nothing gave away what he thought, even the emotions I’d seen before were gone.
We stood staring for moments, before the guard behind me cleared his throat. Shattering the fragile silence and condemning me to whatever would happen next.
“Laissez-nous.” The man waved a hand toward the exit. Instantly, the guard left along with a few others I hadn’t seen lurking. The rustle of their suits sounded like a death sentence as they siphoned out the door.
Oh, God.
My eyes flicked to the left, where a massive library beckoned. Sultry mahogany, rich maroons, and gold bookcases. A roaring fire beckoned to read a book and slouch in the wingback chairs huddled around the flames.
To the right, a ginormous lounge full of comfortable designer sofas and chairs. Animal hides of zebra and tiger littered the floor, and huge glass doors reflected me standing under the bright lights of the foyer.
The man stood an arm’s length away. Tears thickened my throat.
I dropped my gaze, unable to look anymore. Tiredness descended, and all I wanted to do was sleep—to escape this nightmare.
“You won’t be able to run,” he said, watching closely.
I sucked in a breath. “Who says I’m going to run?”
His lips, smooth and well defined against his five o’clock shadow, twitched. “I smell it on you—the scent of prey. You’re looking for a bolthole, somewhere no one can find you.” He leaned in, sending a cloud of expensive cologne around me. “You’re different, I’ll give you that. They didn’t break you, but don’t think you can fight me. You won’t win.”
My heart seized. His tone bordered on angry. He was angry at me? I was the victim here. My chest swelled with indignation. “What do you expect? I was smuggled here. You bought me. I didn’t come freely. Of course, I want to run.”

Debt Inheritance (Indebted, #1) by Pepper Winters

“I own you. I have the piece of paper to prove it. It’s undeniable and unbreakable. You belong to me until you’ve paid off your debts.”

Nila Weaver’s family is indebted. Being the first born daughter, her life is forfeit to the first born son of the Hawks to pay for sins of ancestors past. The dark ages might have come and gone, but debts never leave. She has no choice in the matter.

She is no longer free.

Jethro Hawk receives Nila as an inheritance present on his twenty-ninth birthday. Her life is his until she’s paid off a debt that’s centuries old. He can do what he likes with her—nothing is out of bounds—she has to obey.

There are no rules. Only payments.

4 Indebted Stars

It’s another Pepper Winter’s novel and with that, you can expect some darkness, a damaged Hero and a little kinky fun.

I love Winter’s books, but with that comes with high expectations. Debt Inheritance wasn’t a total hit for me, but that doesn’t mean I can’t love it as the series continues.

Tiny disclaimer - > I’m not fond of books broken up. Yes, Debt Inheritance is a series, but it’s a book broken into parts. I think my issue with this is that these stories drag just a tiny bit. But I did like the length, since Winter’s novels tend to be on the longer side.

The Hero

Jethro is a character. The thing that I love about Winter’s books are the Heroes. You just want to love to hate them. I found Jethro very dominate, mean and very alpha. A tiny bit of me could have seen him a bit meaner. I wanted him to be super villain I learn to love. I’m not sure what Jethro’s “issue” is, but I hope throughout the series, his character is more developed and I see a deeper side of him.

The Heroine

Poor tragic Nila, she gets “kidnapped” and if she leaves her family is in trouble. I like a strong Heroine that fights back at times, but I did find Nila a bit trying. I understand her conflicting issues. She doesn’t want to be in the situation she’s in, yet she’s kind of attracted to Jethro, I get it, it’s her complex. I think I could have liked a bit more banter between the two main characters to really build on the relationship.

The hits

I really liked the length. I felt like the novel was the perfect amount of writing. I have no issues against long books, I just don’t like dragging out stories.

I love the dialogue. I do believe there needs some tweaking on the emotional relationship between the Hero and Heroine, but there’s hardly any internal dialogue. THANK GOD! I’m sorry, I can’t stand internal dialogue, it just drives me nuts.

The misses

The pace is slow. I wanted her to get kidnapped within the first few chapters, but it’s a good portion before any movement happens. Then again the book is broken up so that can be expected.

I wanted the read to be darker. This is a personal preference. Some people will read certain parts and cringe, but me, I wanted to see bloodshed (or something on that level). Debt Inheritance reminds me a lot of Madeleine Abducted, but just more tamed.

I wanted to see different levels of the Hero. Yes, he’s kind of mean, dominate and has some elements of Q from Tears of Tess, but what’s his deal? Why is he the way he is? I understand it’s the first novel, so I hope to see different layers of him in the next parts.

I’m not fond of Heroes telling me how much of a “monster” they can be. I feel like actions speak louder than words. Instead of saying how mean you are, just do something to justify it. This is just a pet peeve of mine.

Overall

Despite the misses, I did enjoy the read. Pepper’s books have always been engaging and it’s nice to read something different from the Tears of Tess series.

My expectations for the series.
- I want Darker
- More emotions from the Hero
- More witty banter between the Hero and Heroine
- Faster pace
- Kinkier scenes

I think if my expectations can be met, I will be a happy camper. For now, not a bad start to a new series.

An ARC was provided in exchange for an honest review

I didn’t look back.
I should’ve looked back.
I should never have placed my hand into that of a monster’s.
That was the last day of freedom. The last day that was my own.
My life was never mine.
My destiny was already written.
My story began the night he came for me.

BOOK TWO: First Debt
“You say I’ll never own you. If I win—you willingly give me that right. You sign not only the debt agreement, but another—one that makes me your master until your last breath is taken. You do that, and I’ll give you this.”
Nila Weaver’s family is indebted. Stolen, taken, and bound not by monsters but by an agreement written over six hundred years ago, she has no way out.
She belongs to Jethro as much as she denies it.
Jethro Hawk’s patience is running out. His inheritance gift tests, challenges, and surprises him—and not in good ways. He hasn’t leashed her but he thinks he might’ve found a way to bind her forever.
Debts are mounting. Payment waiting.

BOOK THREE: Second Debt
“I tried to play a game. I tried to wield deceit as perfectly as the Hawks. But when I thought I was winning, I wasn’t. Jethro isn’t what he seems—he’s the master of duplicity. However, I refuse to let him annihilate me further.”
Nila Weaver has grown from naïve seamstress to full-blown fighter. Every humdrum object is her arsenal, and sex…sex is her greatest weapon of all.
She’s paid the First Debt. She’ll probably pay more.
But she has no intention of letting the Hawks win.
Jethro Hawk has found more than a worthy adversary in Nila—he’s found the woman who could destroy him. There’s a fine line between hatred and love, and an even finer path between fear and respect.
The fate of his house rests on his shoulders, but no matter how much ice lives inside his heart, Nila flames too bright to be extinguished.

Destroyed by Pepper Winters

DestroyedDestroyed by Pepper Winters
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4.5 (I heart Damaged Roan) Stars

I love Pepper Winter books. I have given her six stars reviews and so when I heard she had a new stand alone novel, I was nothing, but excited.

Destroyed is nothing what I expected, but as always, it gripped my heart and made it swell

Summary

Roan is messed up. He was taken when he was little and trained to be an assassin by a ruthless private organization. Years later, he’s no longer part of the organization and owns a fighting club. No one can touch him and he copes by fighting. Hazel is a single mother. She does what she needs to do to raise her child. One night, Hazel goes to Roan’s club and there’s something about Hazel that stirs life into Roan. It’s been years since he has been attracted to a woman (not by choice) and he will do everything he can to understand why.

Roan

Roan is really messed up. If you ever loved damaged Heroes, then he’s your man. His childhood is filled with pain, destruction and death. Roan isn’t capable of love and he has been condition to not be attracted to anyone. So when Hazel sparks something within Roan, he needs to get to know her. But he has issues. If anyone touches him, he goes kind of crazy.

Hazel

Hazel is a strong woman and you feel for her. I wouldn’t call her a damsel in distress, but just a sad soul. I love single mothers in books, so I knew I would love Hazel. Her daughter is eight and is Hazel’s world. Hazel doesn’t want anything to do with Roan, but Roan can offer her something that will make Hazel’s life, not perfect, but better.

Review

I really liked the storyline. I thought Destroyed was really unique and it wasn’t anything I expected. For some reason, when I thought fighter, I was thinking, oh he’s going to box. Oh no, it wasn’t anything like that and why should I be surprised. Destroyed is about two people who are very damaged and are put in impossible situation. You wonder how everything will work out with all the issues that are put against their relationship.

Roan and Hazel’s chemistry is INTENSE and wonderful to read. There’s a huge power struggle between the two and you just want them to work it out! Because of that, there’s crazy sexual tension. No, Destroy is not overly steamy, but there was enough to complete the story.

Since Roan was taken when he was a young child, he is really abrasive and a huge brute. He doesn’t do gentle. He can’t woo Hazel, so he makes a proposition with her, he will pay her for sex. Despite Roan’s battle scars, Hazel is attracted to Roan, but she isn’t a person who is willing to accept money for sex. Roan continually works to fix himself in his own way and Roan tries to be understanding, somewhat pushy, but somehow it never is enough.

There were some flash back scenes, but they were very minor and it helped you build Roan’s character. Roan is the star of the book and oh lord he’s so tortured. The whole read is him struggling, so don’t think this book is all happy. It’s not a light book and many things happen.

Some things didn’t work for me…

Destroyed could have easily been a five star read for me, but there were elements I couldn’t get past.

- I knew the spoiler. I can’t be too upset, but I understand why I was told, but had I not known, I think I would have a different reaction. There’s something about knowing a spoiler that can kind of change the way you see a story.

- Destroyed is very long. I love long books, but only if it’s needed. I feel like 20% could have been easily edited out (a good part of the beginning).

- Because Destroyed is so long, there is a lot of fighting to get to a point. For example, when Roan and Hazel first meet, Roan takes Hazel to his back office and tells Roan how much he wants her. She keeps on telling him to let her leave. This went on and on and on for pages. This happens a lot in a book.

o Insert issue
o Insert Roan’s side
o Insert Hazel’s side
o Fighting in circles for pages
o Finally, one of them gives up and we can move forward.

- There’s a lot of internal dialogue, which is no surprise, because it’s kind of Pepper’s style. It’s still something I do not care for. I get that when I am reading what Hazel is thinking is helping me set up the scene, but sometimes, I just want to move forward. Yes, I skimmed those parts a bit.

- I didn’t care for the mini-intros with each chapter. With each chapter, there’s a brief paragraph that kind of foreshadows how Hazel or Roan feels, which kind of made me cringe when I started to read the chapter. I get the prologue, that’s where you set up the book, but I didn’t need it for EACH CHAPTER. I kind of just wanted to skip those parts too.

Overall

Overall, the storyline nailed it for me. I loved the damaged hero. I loved the strong single mother Heroine. I love the give and take relationship and the crazy ride Pepper gave me. I’m a crazy fan of hers and I can’t wait for her next read.

Spoiler Free Review

Pepper Winters has accomplished what a lot of writers fail to do….meaning she wrote a sequel that is not only just as good as the first book, but maybe better. **GASP**

I loved QQ from start to finish, to the cover, to the characters, EVERYTHING.

It was the PERFECT READ TO ME.

The thing with me, I don’t read blurbs to sequels, if I like the first book, I just go with the next one, so I will give you water down version of what happens.

A LOT OF STUFF HAPPENS.

A LOT OF STUFF HAPPENS TO TESS

A LOT OF STUFF HAPPENS TO Q

A LOT OF STUFF HAPPENS ALL AROUND.

Vague? I know, but you don’t want me to give everything away. So we know from Tears of Tess, that both Tess and Q are working on their relationship, more on Q’s side.  So this moves forward to book 2. Oh my god, how can I even describe how Winters wrote this.
Let me break it down again.

The first part of the book is pretty steamy and light. Tess and Q are getting to know each other again and I enjoyed this part a lot!  I love my kinky scenes and Winters did not disappoint.  Then the book shifts! I do not want to say what happens but you are like “OH MY GOD, DID THAT HAPPENED?!”.

It’s just plain good. After you get over that shock, you go with it and there comes the power struggle. Oh how I love it. People, I do not like angst or tension, but this… yes THIS IS THE STUFF I LOVE.  It’s like watching a train wreck almost about to happen and you are just glued, WAITING, STARING and hating yourself b/c you love every minute of it.

It’s yummy good and …. Wait for it… it keeps on getting better.
Throughout this, I would say Tess really finds herself. You see her shift as a character and grow, in my opinion for the better. I loved her even more than before.  Now, when you finally go through all of this, the read SHIFTS AGAIN!

And yet again, it’s just so good!

The later stuff in the book isn’t an easy read, there are some pushing the boundaries parts, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.  The one word I would describe QQ is just beautiful. It’s a beautiful story, with beautiful characters and I was so glad I could be a part of it.  It’s an epic love story I dream of reading. The can’t-live-without-each-other-kind-of-love story!

So much happens, boundaries are pushed, tears and blood are shed, you will be griping your tablet and will not stop reading until you finish.

If you were a Tears of Tess fan, you will not only be a QQ fan, but a Winters fan for life. She’s, as I have said before, is no one trick pony.  She’s the real deal and talent oozes through her veins. A must read!
