Obsidian (Lux #1) by by Jennifer L. Armentrout [Audio Review]

Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring… until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something… unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don’t kill him first, that is.

5 I love this series Stars

I started with YA novels when I started to read more. In the beginning I was a really harsh reader and every book I read was a new experience (I didn’t really have a lot to compare to). I picked up Obsidian, not knowing who Jennifer L. Armentrout was (little did I know I would own 20 of her paperbacks and fan girl over her at book signings), I just saw all the glowing reviews. Can you believe I originally rated it three stars? Slap me silly I know.

I’m doing a re-read via audio version. This is my favourite form of re-read. I’m not fond of female POV audios, but the narrator does a great male impression.  I’m remembering why I love this series so much and hopefully I’ll finish it soon (I’ve yet to finish the last book). I know slap me again.
Kat is the new girl in town. Correction, small town. Think Gilmore Girls but maybe smaller. Her mom forces her to make nice with the family next door. The thing is, Daemon lives next door and he’s not so nice.

I love Kat. I love how strong and level headed she is. She’s also a book blogger, how cute is that? My husband even asked me if the author did that to get readers into it. I guess maybe, I don’t care if it worked because it did. It’s just adorable. Anyhow, Daemon and his sister, Dee lives next door. Daemon is very straight with Kat. He has no intentions of befriending her.

Dee has other ideas. Dee and Kat’s relationship is cute. Dee wants friends so badly. She has friends, she just wants new friends. Kat wants to be Dee’s friend but Daemon’s cold personality is a turn off.  Kat knows there is something off about the siblings, but she can’t put her finger on it.

This is a YA paranormal book. There’s no steam, but the tension is off the charts! It’s why I love this series so much. Plus Daemon is a big old brute and we love those right? I love how mean Daemon is. There’s a reason why he doesn’t want to get close to Kat, but somehow Kat finds herself into trouble and of course Daemon is there to save the day. Sigh, swoon, faint. I know right?

If you are a fan of YA paranormal and haven’t tried this series, then you are crazy. I suggest you start with this one. If you are a fan of this series and you are curious about the audio, then I suggest you get it. It’s fabulous.

Audio Questions

Where does Obsidian rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is my first YA paranormal audio book and it met all my expectations. I originally rated the book 3 stars and now I’m giving it 5 stars, so you can see how wonderful the audio version is (and of course my taste has changed). I recommend for the YA fans.

What did you like best about this story?

The dynamics between Kat and Daemon were my favourite. I love Daemon’s hot and cold personality. It added some nice tension to the story. I love how strong Kat is. She’s not the silly Heroine and it’s nice and refreshing.

Which character – as performed by Justine Eyre – was your favorite?

This is my first Justine audio. I found her voice a bit deep to be a 17 year old, but she did a great male impression. I love her pace and I thought it was perfect for the book.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Oh man… This is why I am not an author… hmm… I guess the tag line would be…
“Daemon isn’t your average guy… he may be more than what Kat’s bargain for” <- totally cheesy, but it’s the best I could do!

I was so lucky to meet Jennifer at a book signing in Houston, Texas. I was really lucky that during the lunch break, she sat at the same table as me!!!! I totally fan-girled and I was a big mess. Jennifer is like the queen of the YA book world. I asked her how she liked Texas, she said it was very "different". I laughed. More photos HERE

# 1 New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Jennifer L. Armentrout Lives in West Virginia.

All the rumors you heard about her state aren’t true.

Well, mostly. When she's not hard at work writing, she spends her time, reading, working out, watching zombie movies, and pretending to write.
